Canadian Citizenship Test: frequently asked questions

Who has to take the Canadian citizenship test?

In most cases, you must take the test if you are 18 to 54 years old on the day you sign your application. Applicants under 18 or aged 55 and over don't take it.

What is the pass mark for the Canadian citizenship test?

You need 15 correct answers out of 20 (75%). The test lasts 45 minutes.

What is the Canadian citizenship test like?

Usually you take it online at home, after IRCC invites you. It has 20 multiple-choice and true-or-false questions, and you have 45 minutes. You can take it in English or French. Some people take it in person or by video call instead.

How do I book the Canadian citizenship test?

You don't book it yourself. After you apply for citizenship, IRCC emails you an invitation. You then have 30 days to take the test online.

Does IRCC publish official practice questions?

IRCC does not publish the real test questions or an official question bank. Its free study guide, Discover Canada, ends with a few sample questions that are similar to the test, and all the answers are in the guide.

Which book is the Canadian citizenship test based on?

The test is based on the official study guide, "Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship". It covers rights and responsibilities, history, government, elections, justice, symbols, the economy and Canada's regions.

What happens if I fail the Canadian citizenship test?

You can try again. You have up to 3 chances to pass within your 30-day test window. If you fail all 3 times, IRCC invites you to a hearing with a citizenship official, which may include an oral test of your knowledge.

When do I get my citizenship test result?

If you take the test online, you see your score straight away, but it is not final until an IRCC officer checks it, which can take from a few days to a few weeks. Tests taken in person or by video call give the result at once.

Do I pay a fee for the Canadian citizenship test?

No. There is no separate fee for the test. It is part of your citizenship application, and the application fee covers it.

What do I need for the online citizenship test?

You need a computer or tablet with a webcam (not a phone), a reliable internet connection and an acceptable photo ID, such as your PR card. Check IRCC's online test page for the full list before your test.

Can I get help with the test if I have a disability?

Yes. IRCC can offer accommodations such as a Braille, large-print or oral test, or extra time. Ask IRCC for an accommodation before your test.
